A wonderland of shimmering crystals, thousands of wind spinners and ceramic birds, millions of plastic beads, 17 black-face 'lawn jockeys', 13 gilded pigs and a crocodile. That’s just a fraction of what you’ll encounter journeying through American artist Nick Cave’s largest, most thought-provoking and spectacular installation yet.
Best known locally for HEARD·SYD, the joyous flashmob of dancing horses that delighted Sydneysiders in 2016, Cave’s football field-sized installation Until (“Innocent until proven guilty, guilty until proven innocent”) is the result of four years of painstaking artistry; a work of overwhelming detail, sumptuous beauty and stark images to stop you in your tracks.
Speaking to the urgent issues of gun violence, police brutality, race and gender in America, Until is more than dazzling. It’s also a place to meet and a space for discussion. “I view this work as an elaborate community forum, as much as a work of sculpture,” Cave says. Until looks to challenge mindsets, sway hearts and, ultimately, change the way we see the world.
Nick Cave: Until Later is an after-hours session on Mon 14 & Mon 21 January. Find out more here.
