Resist the urge to hibernate, thou art not a bear.

It’s time to snap up the remaining tickets for Sydney Writers' Festival, Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney – three world-class culture blasts that keep your soul warm in the winter. Read on for a few of our highlights and hot picks.

1. Vivid Sydney

Every winter Sydney gets lit. Across 22 days, Vivid Sydney will shine a new light on the city with their biggest program yet.

The festival of lights, music and ideas will also add a brand-new food section to the line-up this year with Vivid Fire Kitchen at Barangaroo and a new Vivid Chef Series pairing global chefs with some of our best loved local restaurants.

Tuck into a delicious First Nations dining experience with renowned Ngemba Weilwan chef Sharon Winsor or wander through the buzzing Carriageworks Night Market carefully curated by Australia’s leading sustainable chef Matt Stone.

A few other highlights from the smorgasbord of shimmering light projections, concerts and talks include The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge and creator Mike White in conversation, José González at the Sydney Opera House celebrating the 20th anniversary of his album Veneer and the multi-sensory, 2.1km installation Lightscape that will fully transform The Royal Botanic Gardens.

Dates: 26 May-17 June 2023

2. Sydney Film Festival

Our city’s much loved film festival turns 70 years old this year and judging by the first films announced, it will be quite the celebration.

Swap the couch for a cosy seat in a cinema and check out The Last Daughter from Wiradjuri woman Brenda Matthew, New Zealand comedy Red, White & Brass, Penélope Cruz starring in L’immensità or the winner of Venice Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize, No Bears.

Plus more to be announced shortly.

Dates: 7-18 June 2023

3. Sydney Writers' Festival

Bookworms rejoice, Sydney Writers’ Festival returns with over 200 events, featuring everything from lush literary conversations with prizewinning authors to fiery panel debates and cackle-inducing comedy events.

Join Booker–prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka for a deep dive into his searing satire The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, sit down with doyennes of the Australian culinary world Stephanie Alexander and Maggie Beer for A Life in Food, or take off on a life-affirming musical exploration of love with writer Clementine Ford and musician Libby O’Donovan’s Love Sermon.

Dates: 22-28 May 2023
