Barber Shop Chronicles comes to Sydney Festival direct from the National Theatre in London, hitting the Seymour Centre between 18 and 28 January.

It’s the latest play by prolific young British-Nigerian playwright and poet Inua Ellams (find out why you should be envious of him here). Ellams’ work explores ideas of identity, belonging, displacement and destiny as an immigrant, and Barber Shop Chronicles is his tribute to the role barber shops play for African and African-descent men: a place where men can get together to talk sport, women and politics, and fathers can bring their sons to get a sharp fade and pick up the knowledge of their community.

Delivered as a high-energy mix of music, dance and storytelling, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Barber Shop Chronicles also has a fire soundtrack. Check out the playlist below, put together by the production team to set the mood for the play and packing a swag of grime, rap, reggaetón and RnB, such as Kendrick, J HUS, your boy Stormzy, Beenie Man, Damian Marley, OutKast, Dead Prez, Lauryn Hill and more.
